Seller ID: 1872 ...Performed by Commodore Byron, Captain Wallis, Captain Carteret, and Captain Cook, in the Dolphin, the Swallow, and the Endeavour drawn up from the journals which were kept by the several commanders, and from the papers of Joseph Banks. Four volumes (Perth, 1789?). Originally published at London by Strahan and Cadell, 1773. John Byron. A Voyage Round the World, undertaken and performed by the Hon. Commodore (now Admiral) Byron, in his Majesty’s Ship the Dolphin, accompanied by Capt. Mouat in the Tamar Sloop, July 1764 to May 1766. Pp. 793- 940). During this voyage, Byron, grandfather of the poet, took possession of the Falkland Islands on behalf of Britain nearly causing a war between Great Britain and Spain, as both countries had armed fleets ready to contest the sovereignty of the barren islands. Later Byron encountered the populated Tuamotus and Tokelau Islands, and Nikunau in the southern Gilbert Islands; he also visited the Northern Marianas Islands [Wikipedia]. Samuel Wallis. A New, Accurate, Genuine, and Complete History, of a Voyage Round the World, performed by Capt. Samuel Wallis, Esq. In his Majesty’s Ship the Dolphin, August 1766 to May 1768. Pp. 941- 1028. While rounding Cape Horn, Capt. Wallis’ vessel became separated from Carteret’s Swallow in rain and fog and they were forced to carry out their explorations of the south Pacific from April 1767 without one another’s support. Wallis sailed to Tahiti, which he named "King George the Third's Island" in honour of the King. He continued to Batavia, where many of the crew died from dysentery, then via the Cape of Good Hope to England, arriving in May 1768. He was able to pass on useful information to James Cook who was due to depart shortly for the Pacific, and some of the crew from the Dolphin sailed with Cook [Wikipedia]. A New, Authentic, Remarkable, and Entertaining History and Narrative, of a Voyage Round the World; undertaken and performed by that Neglected and Gallant Officer, Capt. Philip Carteret, Esq. In his Majesty’s Sloop the Swallow, August 1766 to …. 1769. Pp. 1029- 1184. Carteret’s account of his exploration of the south Pacific after being separated from Wallis’ vessel while rounding Cape Horn. Carteret discovered Pitcairn Island and explored the seas around New Guinea and and the Solomon Islands [Wikipedia]. Hawkesworth was commissioned by the Admiralty (Lord Sandwich) to edit the journals of these explorers and produce a popular account of their various expeditions into the Pacific, gaining thereby popular support for the sizable claims these explorations made on the public purse.
