Seller ID: 2732R Philadelphia: George Barrie, [1875]. First edition, in two volumes (pp.viii, 358, contents; 360, list of plates). Folio (38 cm) in maroon buckram, gilt titles; “one hundred grand compositions by Gustave Dore” executed by a number of skilled engravers in wood. J.-P. Michaud (1767- 1839) published the first volume of the History in 1811 but continued working on the subject for some years into the 1830’s with a visit to Egypt and Syria. The book is described as “more interesting than exact”, and it’s true there are any number of flashing swords and rearing horses and no doubt that suited Dore just fine, but Michaud was, afterall, a journalist rather than an historian. Generally tight and clean, but the covers are a bit frayed along the bottom edges with a few stains; plate 1 with a thumb-size chip out of the margin not affecting the image, several loose endpapers, a page or two with tide-line; one volume opens at several places and there is a hinge just starting. Still Very Good. Price: $800.00
