London: Marcus Ward, c. 1900. First edition thus (pp. 21). Quarto (23 cm) in gray blue publisher’s cloth, gilt titles and other decoration to cover, a.e.g., decorative epps. Fancy edition, also available in plain cloth. With many full-page and in-text illustrations by C. M. Padday, noted for a muted palette, unusual for a Marcus Ward production, his seascapes and related nautical subjects. Ward was a major publisher of chromolithographs, both as book illustrations for their books and as decorative stationery, especially Christmas cards (curly- haired, pink cheeked children with a Christmas toy). This edition of the Mariner may well have been issued as a special Christmas gift book- there’s quite a lot of gilt. Splits to cover edges repaired, a few spots, minor soiling, front hinge starting; text is clean and bright. Scarce.

Price: $150.00
