History of the Zulu War and Its Origin.
Seller ID: 2403F
London: Chapman and Hall, 1881. Second edition, with Additions, and Map (pp. viii, 445). Small octavo (19 cm) in dark green publisher’s cloth, gilt titles and decoration in blind; folding map in pocket at rear. Frances Colenso (1849- 1887) was a daughter of Bishop John W. Colenso, the first Bishop of Natal and probably the only member of the colonial Anglican hierarchy with a sympathetic understanding of Zulu life and culture. His daughter’s book, written with her ‘friend’ (as the Victorians would have said) Edward Durnford, is a defense of her father’s work generally and of his opposition to the Zulu War of 1879 particularly. Minor wear to the extremities, front hinge starting, a few spots to the back cover; a Very Good copy
