L. Scott Bailey, Pub. (1962- 1986); CBS etc. (1987- 2012). Hardcover, long folio (28 cm), in pictorial cloth binding, gilt title and decoration. Automobile Quarterly’s expertly written articles are illustrated with art work and photography of a high order, the gold standard in fact. Each highly illustrated issue was produced in hardcover, as a long folio (28 cm), in a pictorial cloth binding, with gilt titles and decoration. The Quarterly continued on for some years after Bailey’s retirement with the Columbia Broadcasting System, among others, as publisher, but Bailey’s design for the publication was not altered until the late 1990’s, quite late in the life of publication. For many, who lacked the wherewithal to acquire, say, their own Stutz Boat Tail Speedster, this quarterly display of automotive elegance was probably the next best thing. In the New York Times obituary notice for Mr. Bailey, Paul Vitello says, in part, ‘In the 24 years he ran Automobile Quarterly before retiring in 1986, Mr. Bailey published an unbroken chain of gold-embossed [sometimes silver gilt] quarterly reports that constituted a virtual archive of the known universe of the car: long biographical essays about racecar drivers, designers and forgotten inventors of breakthrough automotive technologies; historical dissertations on classics like the Duesenberg; offbeat yarns like the definitive story of the gyroscopically balanced two-wheel motorcar designed in 1914 by Count Peter Schilovsky of Russia.…’ (15 July 2012). A Fine copy in dark blue faux leather.
