Pittsfield: the author, 1828. First edition (pp. vii, contents, errata, 300). Duodecimo (17.5 cm) in full calf, gilt title and decoration to spine. The key word in the title is ‘Unmasked’ for its is the purpose of this former member, now converted elsewhere, to discredit Shakerism— something of a purgative. The sealed pages towards the end were fixed with wax and meant to suggest a sensational revelation was at hand, but, the seals having long ago been broken, the effect has been lost… and there’s little to surprise nowadays in any case.
