Sears, Paul B.
Deserts on the March
Seller ID: 1971
London: Routledge & Kegan Paul, 1949. First British edition (pp. ix, 181, index). Octavo (21 cm) in pictorial dust wrapper in tan publisher’s cloth with decorative chapter heads; a fulsome introduction by Louis Bromfield. As a professor of botany at the University of Oklahoma in the 1930’s, Sears could not but bear witness to the heedless, exploitative, and destructive agricultural practices which characterized agriculture land management policy in North America. (This British edition was published in the same year as Aldo Leopold’s Sand County Almanac which depicted conditions in an over-grazed and abandoned region of Wisconsin.) A few nibbles around the edges of an otherwise clean dw; text is clean, bright, and sound.
