Wild Flowerts of Canada
Seller ID: 1970
Montreal: Montreal Star, n.d. [c. 1895]. First edition (unpaginated). Long folio (30 cm) in a bespoke binding by H. M. Tomlinson of Sherbrooke, QC, decorative brown cloth, gilt titles, green endpapers; featuring two hundred and eighty-eight colour plates, two to a page (16 cm x 10 cm), accompanied by notes on each of the various species. Offered in installments to subscribers by the publishers of the Star, it was up to the subscriber to look after the binding. Consequently, while there are likely a few complete, unbound copies extant, each of the bound copies is singular (unless the neighbours clubbed together and got a group rate from, say, Mr. Tomlinson). Absent the flowery frontispiece. The notes focus on the decorative and apparent herbal qualities of the wild plants. An attractive and colourful Canadian flower book from around the turn of the century. Light scattered age toning and blotching as usual with this paper, but the well-drawn plates are generally bright and clear (the artist is unidentified).
