Seller ID: 1862

New York: Sheldon, 1876. First edition (pp. x, 648, index). Quarto (24 cm) in original publisher’s decorative brown cloth binding, gilt titles and decorations to front and rear covers. Tal Hunter’s bibliography High Spot #1 of the Custer commentaries. The first and for 25 years the most influential biography of GAC which, together with his wife’s publicity campaigns, was the source of the myth of GAC, the gallant warrior. with which countless school children and movie goers were innoculated. Over thirty movies were made featuring some version of GAC, including one in which Custer was played by Ronald Reagan (1940) and one in which GAC was played by Errol Flynn (1941). The actors chosen for the role suggest the nature of the cinematic treatment. Not until the publication of van der Water’s Glory Hunter (1934) was a biography published with an account commensurate with the realities of GAC’s career. Near Fine
