Presentation copy, inscribed and signed by Stone. In dark green publisher's cloth, gilt titles to covers and spines, endpapers reproduce map of the New Jersey coastal strip and the town plan of Portsmouth (1726); two frontispieces in full colour with tissue guards, prolifically illustrated throughout with reproductions of paintings and drawings by Earle L. Poole, Conrad Roland, Richard E. Bishop, J. Fletcher Street, and Herbert Brown with the addition of photographs from a variety of sources. The culmination of Stone's fifty-years as an ornithologist, chiefly in association with the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences and the Auk, completed in the last years of his life (1866- 1939).
