Edinburgh: Lizars, 1827. First edition (unpaginated). Large quarto (36 cm), original blue paper over boards; fifty-two fine engraved plates drawn from nature (first 34 numbered), uncoloured as issued, tissue guards in place; plate impressions 28 cm x 21 cm. Following on leaving the army and a brief, unsuccessful venture as a mill owner (The mill burned to the ground), Thomas Brown (1785- 1862) turned to writing and illustrating books on natural history and was for over twenty years curator of the Manchester Museum. Boards worn at the edges, title page discoloured; otherwise clean, bright, and sound. A scarce book.
