Edinburgh: William Blackwood, 1822. Second edition (pp. 400). Duodecimo (17.5 cm) in half leather over marbled paper, gilt titles and decorations to spine. In his English Social History, G. M. Trevelyan says of Annals of the Parish, "In the last twenty years of the [18th] century, cotton mills were rising in villages of Lanark, Renfrew and Ayr, with social consequences described in Galt's Annals of the Parish, that little story book, first published in 1821, which still remains the most intimate and human picture of Scotland during the period of change in the reign of George III." Lightly worn at the edges. Quite a handsome copy.
