Surflet's English translation first appeared in 1600 (See our book no.1104 for the second Englished edition). Quarto (23cm x 18cm), in modern half leather over marbled paper, gilt title to spine; marbled endpapers, red lettered title page; illustrated throughout with a number of woodcuts showing lay-outs, stills, etc.; final section on measurement (l'usage de la Iauge) with figures in text. An early country handbook and encyclopaedia which, if it could not bring science fully to bear on farming and country life, at least sought to bring reason and order. An important foundation book on agriculture and health (also distilleries). Considering the popularity of the book ( French editions ran until the early 18th century), it appears surprisingly scarce.
