Volume I: A History of the Birds of the Canary Islands and of the Salvages (xxxi, 358 pp.); Volume II: A History of the Birds of Madeira, the Desertas, and the Porto Santo Islands (xlviii, 207 pp., with folding map); Volume III: A History of the Birds of the Azores (xix, 262 pp.); Volume IV: A History of the Birds of the Cape Verde Islands (xxxi, 458 pp.). Includes maps, lists of breeding birds, photographs of the countryside, relief drawings, etc. In short, as complete an account of the birds and their habitats as could be imagined, with sketches of the human environment as well (in the manner of "The natives were surprisingly intelligent..."). In blue cloth, gilt titles to spine. Tight bindings and clean text and illustrations. Call numbers in ink on spines and several unobtrusive marks as from a private library. A very nice set of a hard to find, comprehensive study.
