London: James Ridgway, c. 1851. Signed and inscribed to Lord [?]esstone by William Molesworth (1810- 1855) who was, briefly at the end of his life, Colonial Secretary (pp. 42). Octavo (21 cm) in full black morocco, gilt titles and decoration, a.e.g., marbled endpapers. An argument against military occupation of colonial territories, claiming such a practice is expensive and prone to failure and urging the closure or drastic reduction of military garrisons across the Empire and in South Africa in particular. Molesworth was influential in ending or at least curtailing the policy of transportation to Australia of those convicted of criminal acts. Fine.
