A ‘study in the survival of formal and vernacular styles from Britain, America, and Europe’, Pain’s book stands as the single most influential and authoritative work on the furniture of 19th century English Canada. It is not uncommon for auction cataloguers to cite Pain (as in, ‘See Pain, p. 211, fig. 537’) to authenticate and suggest the value of a period sales item.
