1 [Ferriss, Edna W. (Ed.) and Thomas Bewick] 21 Engravings

St. Charles, IL: privately printed, 1951. Edition limited to 500 unnumbered copies, pulled from the original 42 blocks engraved by Bewick; in two unpaginated volumes of 21 wood engravings each (Perhaps a better title would have been 42 Engravings), the set housed in complimentary slipcase in decorative paper. 8vo (22cm x 15cm) in green morocco half leather over decorative paper featuring images of Bewick’s engravings, gilt decoration and titles to spines, silk place holders. In the early 1940’s Ferriss purchased a number of ‘little black blocks’ from a Chicago bookseller. Bewick’s work as a wood engraver was unknown to her at the time, but she took care to learn about her little blocks of ink-stained wood and produced this edition of nicely printed images from Bewick’s Quadrupeds and British Birds, which are presented here in company with selections from the original texts. Wear to the extremities of the slipcase, faded at the edges; spines uniformly sun-faded to a not unattractive brown, nothing untoward. A bright, clean set with sharp images from Bewick’s best work.

2 Bewick, Thomas A General History of Quadrupeds

Newcastle-upon Tyne: Thomas Bewick et al., 1811. Sixth edition (index, x, 525, adverts) with numerous wood engravings by Bewick. Tall octavo in dark green half leather and pebbled cloth; ruled gilt decoration, gilt titles, five raised bands, t.e.g. Thomas Bewick (1753- 1828), a contemporary of William Blake, confined his work to more ordinary subjects than those addressed by that mystic poet- engraver. The General History of Quadrupeds (1790) and the History of British Birds (1797) are Bewick’s most important works, each of which was issued in a number of editions in his lifetime. A complete description of his work as an engraver, however, comprises two entire volumes (1867- 68). Bewick’s Memoir, published by a daughter in 1862, describes ‘an early impulse to draw [which] constantly filled the margins of his schoolbooks’. To his ‘rustic neighbours [he] became an eminent painter, and the walls of their houses were ornamented with an abundance [of] rude productions.’ See also our Thomas Bewick Marginal Drawings & Notes. Bewick’s third great work, completed late in life, was an edition of the Fables of Aesop. Bewick (and those who worked for him) produced wood engravings to decorate, illustrate, and enhance all manner of publications-- ‘more than eighty small books for children..commissioned by some eighteen printers and booksellers..such titles as The Tale of Tommy Trip, Cinderella, Goody Goosecap, and Jack Dandy, as well as many books of fables and riddles and manuals for spelling and reading’ (ODNB). If you look closely at the vignettes here in Quadrupeds (A magnifying glass helps), you will discovery ironic little slices of ordinary life: a mischievous little girl is about to give a horse’s tail a sharp yank, while her mother flies down an orchard ladder to intervene; a traveling exotic animal show traipses dispiritedly down the road to the next country town; a monkey wielding a straight razor contemplates a hirsute image in a shaving mirror. A few foxed preliminaries, but still a clean, delightful copy of Bewick’s first important work, one in which the platypus makes an early, if not its first, appearance (described as an ‘amphibious animal’). 3 Bewick, Thomas A General History of Quadrupeds.

Newcastle-upon Tyne: Thomas Bewick et al., 1790. First edition (index, viii, 456) with numerous wood engravings by Bewick. Tall octavo, rebacked in new three-quarter leather over original polished calf; new silver gilt titles on new label; new endpapers; five pages with repaired tears. [See our catalogue number 951/952 Thomas Hugo. The Bewick Collector. Volume I: A Descriptive Catalogue of the Works of Thomas and John Bewick, including Cuts, in various states, for Books and Pamphlets, Private Gentlemen, Public Companies, Exhibitions, Races, Newspapers, Shop Cards, Invoice Heads, Bar Bills, Coal Certificates, Broadsides... and Wood Blocks. Volume II: A Supplement to a descriptive Catalogue of the Works of Thomas and John Bewick; Consisting of Additions to the various Divisions of Cuts, Wood Blocks, etc., Enumerated in that Work. London: Lovell, Reeve and Co., 1866. London: L. Reeve and Co., 1868. See also our Thomas Bewick Marginal Drawings & Notes.] If you look closely at the vignettes here in Quadrupeds (A magnifying glass helps), you will discovery ironic little slices of ordinary life: a traveller tries crossing a stream on stilts or by vaulting with too short a pole. The best biographical account of Bewick’s early career, a time when he partnered and struggled with Ralph Beilby (who inserted his name as author as the ms went to the printer), is Jenny Uglow who says in Nature’s Engraver, Bewick ‘brought nature to life, and revived the nearly forgotten art of wood engraving’ (306) . A few lightly foxed preliminaries and it will taken a while for the shine to wear off the new leather, but still a clean, delightful copy of the first edition of Bewick’s first important work.

4 Bewick, Thomas A General History of Quadrupeds.

Newcastle-upon Tyne: Thomas Bewick et al., 1824. Eighth edition (index, x, 526) with numerous wood engravings by Bewick. Tall octavo in three-quarter leather and purple pebbled cloth; gilt titles and decoration, five raised bands. Quadrupeds was the first important book to be illustrated using wood engravings. If you look closely at the vignettes here in Quadrupeds (A magnifying glass helps), you will discovery ironic little slices of ordinary life: an exotic animal show traipses dispiritedly down the road to the next country town; a starved sheep nibbles at an old broom. This is the last edition of Quadrupeds issued in Bewick’s lifetime and incorporates final changes. A few foxed preliminaries and here and there through the text, but still a clean, delightful copy of Bewick’s first important work, one in which the platypus makes an early, if not its first, appearance (described as an ‘amphibious animal’). A handsomely bound copy.

5 Bewick, Thomas [and Ralph Beilby] A History of British Birds

Newcastle: for the author, 1805. Second edition, in two volumes, Land Birds and Water Birds (xxxviii, 346; xxii, 400). Nearly three hundred wood engravings of birds plus many head and tail pieces, etc., in the inimitable Bewick style. Tall octavo in three-quarter leather over marbled paper, plain gilt titles and decoration to spines (hinges cracked but holding firm, wear to the extremities); large paper with generous margins framing the text and illustrations (lightly foxed first few prelims). Land Birds, first published in 1797, was seven years in the making and Water Birds, published in 1804, five (All the while, of course, Bewick carried on the work of his busy design and engraving business). The result, taken together with his Quadrupeds, as Jenny Uglow says in her admirable biography Nature’s Engraver (Faber 2006), ‘brought nature to life, and revived the nearly forgotten art of wood engraving’ (306). Engravings accompanying clean text are sharp and clear. A handsome copy of an enduring ornithological classic.
