Dugmore, A.[rthur] Radclyffe The Romance of the Newfoundland Caribou. An intimate account of the life of the reindeer of North America.
Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott, 1913. First edition (pp. viii, 191). Large quarto (28 cm), with 73 illustrations (photographs and reproductions of paintings by Dugmore), eight in-text illustrations, a map of Canada and Alaska showing the range of various caribou varieties, and a folding map of Newfoundland in a pocket at the rear. Bound in blue cloth, gilt decorations, gilt titles to cover and spine. Arthur Radclyffe Dugmore (1870- 1955) was one of the new ‘hunters’ who captured his subjects in photographs and in paintings. Dugmore’s first ventured to Africa on a photographic safari just after the turn of the century, some time before hunting with a camera became common practice among conservation minded naturalists. Dugmore spent nine seasons in Newfoundland observing and photographing caribou close up with the intention of preserving details of their life cycle, migration patterns and habitat. His book was at the time perhaps the best single source of informed observation on the Newfoundland herds. Spine ends and corners with some wear; otherwise a very good copy. Price:
